IVF can feel like a miracle when it comes to starting a family. After months, if not years, of sub-fertility diagnosis, countless clinic visits, injections, and IVF cycles, holding your kid in your arms feels like the will of the universe realized through medical science.
However, after IVF, many first-time parents ask how to have a second child, especially if their finances are limited. As a result, they start looking for answers to a simple yet essential question: can you conceive a kid naturally after IVF? It’s a complicated question, and the solution isn’t as straightforward as you may think. We enlisted the expertise of Dr. Hrishikesh Pai to help you figure out what’s going on and how you can expand your family.
Dr. Hrishikesh Pai, MD, FCPS, FICOG, MSc, is a top gynecologist. His prominence in the field of gynecology has allowed him to rise to the position of Past Secretary-General of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI), one of the country’s largest professional medical organizations, with 33,000 gynecologists. In 2006, Dr. Pai served as the Senior Vice President of FOGSI. And here’s what he has to say about your odds of conceiving a child naturally following IVF.
Let’s start by figuring out who requires IVF in the first place.
IVF is a straightforward procedure in which sperm and eggs are taken from male and female partners and produced fertile in a lab. “We make eggs and sperm meet artificially outside in those patients where they couldn’t meet naturally in the fallopian tube,” explains a specialist from Bloom IVF Centre, India’s leading IVF center.
“IVF is recommended in some situations of the tubal block, uterine TB, PCOD, inadequate ovarian reserve, pelvic inflammatory illness, and grade 3 and 4 endometriosis,” she continues. According to the specialist, IVF is also recommended for males with low sperm count and motility and azoospermia (no sperm).
Yes, after a successful IVF pregnancy, you can have a child naturally.
After you’ve had one IVF pregnancy, there’s a good chance you’ll be able to get pregnant naturally without the use of assisted reproductive technology. However, it all depends on the reason you choose IVF in the first place.
“Sometimes older couples don’t have the patience to wait for natural conception, so they choose IVF for their first kid,” explains Dr. Hrishikes Pai. Patients may also have difficulty conceiving as a result of their unhealthy lifestyle. They become pregnant on their own whenever they modify their lifestyle, such as decreasing weight.”
Even in cases of unexplained infertility, couples who have already had one IVF kid often get pregnant on their own the second time around, according to the expert.
Even after an IVF failure, you can conceive naturally! Your road to becoming a parent doesn’t have to end because of an IVF failure—in rare circumstances, couples welcome babies spontaneously despite unfavorable IVF outcomes.
IVF allows you to have many children.
If you have specific medical issues that make IVF your sole option for conceiving children, keep in mind that the procedure can result in multiple births. “With IVF, couples can have two to three children—it all depends on what they desire,” Dr. Hrishikesh Pai adds.
“However, we should not go for more than two,” he adds as a rule.
Are you trying for a second child? Here are some reminders from Dr. Pai.
“First and foremost,” he emphasizes, “couples must be comfortable.” “They must avoid stress and alter their way of life.” Please keep in mind that, at an advanced age, lifestyle and behaviors such as smoking and drinking are the most crucial reasons for infertility. So, if you want to get pregnant, you must take care of this.”
While your career is vital, Dr. Pai encourages you to prepare for this aspect of your life. “As we get older, our fertility, ovarian reserve, and egg quality start to decline, while the chance of pregnancy problems rises. Couples should plan their pregnancy ahead of time, keeping this in mind,” he concludes.
