The living room is, in fact, the main room in any home. We spend our free time there with family and friends.
Before moving on to the key points of creating a design, it is worth paying attention to the shape of the room. A square room is considered ideal for a comfortable interior – such furniture is placed easily and ergonomically. It is better to bring the rectangular shape of the room as close as possible to the square, taking one of the short walls with a closet or, for example, a small podium for a secluded seating area. In an irregularly shaped room, large pots of fresh flowers, an armchair or a pouffe can be placed in oblique corners to enjoy the view from the window.
Colour
Choosing the color scheme of the room is one of the most important aspects in interior planning. It would be more expedient to first choose the furniture, and then the color of its surroundings. Plain smooth walls of light color will make a small living room more spacious. Cream color in this case will be the most advantageous, as it will serve as a backdrop for any bright accents. A large room provides opportunities for various combinations of not only colors, but also textures that can be used to divide the room, for example, into a TV area and a dining area.
Furniture
The living room, planned according to the laws of ergonomics, should be 50% free of furniture, so choose it thoughtfully. Remember, the main task of the living room is to be a place of rest for the owners. Do not fill every meter with interior items – this will create unnecessary tightness. The best combination for a small living room would be 3 seat sofas along the wall, a couple of interesting armchairs or pouffes, a coffee table. It is better to refuse small details and objects. Large interior objects are ideal for spacious rooms. If you have such a living room, you can decorate it with a large corner sofa, set back from the wall, cozy armchairs, shelving, floor vases and floor lamps.
To give the room a symmetry that is pleasing to the eye, arrange the main furniture in a triangle pattern. The center of the composition will be occupied by a sofa, on the sides – two tables or chairs, and on the wall above the sofa – a wide picture.
Light
Lighting in the living room can both decorate and destroy all interior ideas. Properly selected and positioned light can create emotions and sensations, as well as emphasize the advantages and hide the shortcomings of the room. Central lighting is better not to do in small rooms. A large chandelier will look too bulky in such rooms, and a modest one will not do its job. Place lights where you really need them. In a large living room, the central light in the form of a chandelier is not necessary if it does not additionally serve as an element of decor. Spotlights around the perimeter of the room and a couple of floor lamps will fully meet the needs for light.
Accessories
Accessories help set the accents and give any room a cozy look. You can decorate the room by choosing curtains, cushions, paintings or photographs for the walls. The main thing is a sense of proportion and style. It is not worth overloading a small space with decorative elements – bet on an exquisite minimum. Do not put on display the entire collection of figurines, candles and other gizmos dear to the heart. It is better to admire a part of the collection and change it according to your mood.
For large living rooms, there are fewer restrictions. Here you can give free rein to your imagination and approach the choice of decor more boldly. The main thing is that all selected accessories please the eye. At the same time, even in very large rooms it is not recommended to make more than two accents.
Beware the carpet
The choice of flooring depends on your taste – whether it is a bamboo mat, a Persian rug or a skin with long and fluffy fur. It is important that they are in harmony with other elements of the interior.
It is not recommended to lay a carpet or carpet in a small living room close to the walls – this will visually reduce the space. It is better to highlight a recreation area with a sofa, armchairs and a table with a light-colored carpet.
In a large room, you can play with colors, textures and ornaments, highlighting zones, or vice versa, harmoniously bringing everything together. It would be appropriate as one large carpet in the center, as well as several coverings at different points in the living room.
